| ELECTROVALUE presented at international level On the 8th to 12th November, the Centre for Pollution Prevention (C3P) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) hosted their 7th annual technical workshop on environment and energy at the GE Global Research – Europe facility in Munich, Germany, in which the ELECTROVALUE Project had a dedicated session on the 11th of November.
With an attendance of over 80 individuals from different countries, including 40 international specialists on wide-ranging themes of environment and renewable energies, the NASA/C3P - 2009 International Workshop on Environment and Alternative Energy provided an excellent forum to showcase innovative and emerging pollution prevention and renewable energy technologies. Many themes have been presented in the Workshop program, such as the role of innovation in Sustainable Development, the different techniques of soil remediation, the renewable energy systems or the management and replacement of materials, and a session dedicated exclusively to the management of Waste of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) was also set up by the ELECTROVALUE team. The ELECTROVALUE session, entitled “WEEE and e-Waste recovery”, covered some technical results from the project achieved up to date as well as presentations related with the WEEE manager and the EEE manufacturer perspectives. This session was leaded by Mrs. Mónica Mendes who had also opened the session and introduced the ELECTROVALUE framework project to all attendees. Her presentation has demonstrated the importance of the project to the current European policy strategy, and also the added value of the practices followed by the project to this business sector, for society in general and for the Sustainable Development. Mr. Eduardo Silva from ISQ (vd photo) outlined the methodologies that will be used to determine the environmental benefits of the project results namely the Life Cycle Assessment. Following, Mrs. Mónica Luizio from Amb-3E Portugal, presented an overview on the current WEEE scenario in terms of implementation and management in Portugal and main impact of ELECTROVALUE project results from a e-waste Manager point of view perspective. Finally, Dr. Klaus Hieronymi presented the concerns of HP with the e-waste in underdevelopment countries, current situation and main social and environmental impacts related. The participation in this workshop is in line with the dissemination project’ objectives and was an extremely positive experience which facilitated the promotion of ELECTROVALUE project internationally, the presentation of its first results, methodologies and future actions through a great space of transnational and overseas debate around this issue entirely innovative.
